Hall of Fame – Ann Zhang

Ann Zhang, ACS/ALB, CCB Xiamen Toastmasters Club
AC achieve in Nov.16, 2010

AC journey is really great for me. Compared with the basic skill in the Competent Communicator, Advanced Communicator manuals are more focus on the special aspect of the public speech.

I started AC journey with the Entertaining Speaker, that is a big challenge for me, because I don’t really think I am a funny people, a lot of difficulties I met during I do this manual, in some projects, I even got none laughter from the audience. But some magic thing happened when I persist in practicing the entertaining speech, I gained the first place in the public speech contest which held by my company, and what made me won the contest is just the humor I conducted in my speech.

I continue my AC journey, and being familiar with many kinds of speeches, eg, how to present the award, accept the award, speak in praise, make a cold call, speak to inform, I really enjoy this journey and be more and more professional during the touring.

Hall of Fame – Terra Sun

Terra Sun, ACS, Global Communicators,
ACS achieved in Dec,2010

I am a charter member of Global Communicators who officially charted in December, 2003 in Beijing. I have had the benefit of Toastmasters since then. The more I practice, the more I am good at nervousness control, a logical speech delivery and the whole meeting host and so on.

I have a goal to achieve DTM in a coming few years and I persist in my goal and make efforts to obtain it. Actually I have to face a lot of difficulties, such as family burden, my son, busy work and so on. On the other hand, it has encouraged me to continue my Toastmaster journey and move forward.
I have enhanced my communication skills step by step and become more confidence in public speaking and will improve my leadership skills. I also want to set up a good example to my son. When he grows up, he will understand the meaning of perseverance and stick to an aim what his mother has done.
I am lucky to know Toastmasters what drive me as it is my life-long journey.

Synergy Advanced TMC, HK

null

Synergy Advanced TMC was founded in 2008 by founding president Vikky tam. The mission of the club is to provide a supportive environment for competent Toastmasters to achieve greatness together, and that’s why we are called synergy toastmasters .
The regular meetings provide a platform for members to practice speeches, as well as workshops. Each meeting, the club would have a member to conduct a mini-workshop besides speeches delivery.

Panel Evaluation is one of their highlights: there would be 3 evaluators to evaluate one speech, and each evaluator would concentrate on different angles-project objectives , delivery & body language, speech content & conclusion.

Synergy Advanced TMC was designed for competent Toastmasters to join, so the members are experienced TMs and most of them are working in management level in different professions. There are usually workshops in regular meetings, so the members can share their own expertise, and people can learn from each other. The club is also active in organizing workshops and parties for members and other clubs to participate.

The club’s current goal is to attract more new CC members, so that more CCs would benefit from the programs.

The club has created a Facebook account under the name ” Synergy Advanced Toastmasters Club”

CCB Xiamen TMC

Joshua Cambell , the president of CCB Xiamen TMC, has been TM for 363 days, and he just finished his CC. He set the goal to finish CC in a year, and he did it.

CCB Xiamen TMC, on the other hand, is about 3-4 years old, founded by an American guy and Chinese guy. The American was a college professor who helped to found the club, and the Chinese man was a high-level officer with CCB. Now both of them have moved on, and the club has been struggling.
At the time Joshua took over, membership was down, and the same 8-12 people attended the meeting. Sometimes there were only 4 or 5 people. He thought the VPE would have the most difficult job: make the meeting more interesting or attractive, so he chose to be the president of the club.

Since he became the president, he has been trying to go back to the basics, follow the TI practice, and put in place properly the new mentor system, making sure everyone has a mentor or is mentoring someone. He believes that is the first step to retaining member.

CCB Xiamen TMC is a bilingual club, with mostly 20+ and 30+ business people. The atmosphere is rather formal, but the people also have fun. They want to take Toastmasters more seriously, and most members are trying to improve their careers. At the meetings, about half of the people wear formal outfits, instead of jeans. Members are proud of how the club is and want to stay that way. They also have two racing DTMs!

Joshua believes that TM meeting is not English corner or English training program–there is no teacher; instead, everybody is a teacher. We share with each other and learn from each other. A lot of people who join TMC want to improve their English. You can learn from your mentor, and you can learn more from your mentee; you can learn more when you are a leader.

Their goals for 2011: raise membership, and have more dedicated/quality members. The club wants to have 20 members who are serious, and that would double the current number. They don’t want members who are just interested in improving English, who disappear when they get busy. So Joshua wants to teach people about the whole thing, make them understand about TM practices, and what we are doing, to make sure they understand it.

China Capital Toastmasters Club (CCTMC)

null

CCTMC is a well-known club in Beijing. The club has weekly meetings on Thursday evenings; it is easy to be found online, and its officers respond quickly to people’s email or phone requests.

Since being founded in 2006, CCTMC has produced many famous TMs: French member Yann won the District level’s International speech Champion in May 2010 in Shanghai; and Hubert, the chair of the Fall 2010 District conference in Beijing, founded the CHIC TMC in Beijing.

Among Beijing Toastmasters clubs, CCTMC is known to be a very professional club, following the TI model faithfully, and providing a quality learning environment for the members and guest. At CCTMC, evaluation is done by very experienced members, and sometimes professional trainers. Therefore, the club provides very good evaluation, and members and guests feel they can learn a lot from it.

CCTMC also boasts diversity. The club has quite a few foreign members: 3 from UK, 2 from France, and 1 from Hungary. Those members, due to their different background and culture, bring different ways of thinking to the club, and add much diversity and color to the club. Yann, a French member, won 3 champions in the Evaluation, Chinese, and International district contest. A UK member, who graduated from Cambridge University, is currently a professor at Qinghua University, teaching English Literature. With such a high-level native speaker in the club, members feel their English has been improved significantly.

The club has more than 40 members, and about 30 of them are active members. Most of the meetings are full-house. Also, there is no entrance fee if you want to attend the club meetings.

Toastmasters Club Fedex@Shanghai

2P Club: Passionate and Purple Promise

null

A new corporate club in Shanghai, and the first Fedex corporate club in Asia-Pacific region, Fedex TMC has lots of potential and lots to offer to its members and the general Toastmasters community. Since being chartered in September 2010, the club has had some very exciting experiences.

First of all, Fedex TMC has got much help from Louie Lu (Area Governor), Grant Wu (Area 2 Governor), Syna Ruan, members of Microsoft club, and their HR director, who has been a TM for 15 years in Singapore. They guided the committee members to found and run the club.

The No.1 challenge facing the new club is to recruit members. At first, people they approached had very little understanding of Toastmasters and thought as a direct marketing company.

The 2nd challenge is to organize high-level meetings, so members and guests will be attracted to the meetings. At the beginning, sometimes the club had only 7 or 8 people in a meeting. To address that, the club invited the HRD to come and share her experience about Toastmasters, and they chose topics about health and career development, which are attractive for professionals.

Most importantly, they have gained support from the management of the company, and organized a big promotion of the club at the company’s annual meeting. They showed a video featuring members talking about their experience about Toastmasters, and their HRD and senior mangers showing their support for the club; they made 300 color-print fliers to give out; and the club’s president, Roy Chen, gave a 1 min talk about Toastmasters at the company’s annual meeting.

The club says they are all about 2Ps:
The first P is Passion. Club officers have been very passionate in working for the club, and their passion is shown through the promotion video production and holding joint meetings with Adidas club, during which the members were encouraged to show their talents like dancing.

The other P is Purple promise: Fedex has distinctive corporate culture, which has greatly influenced the club. Fedex values personal growth, and Fedex TMC has been promoting personal growth. They have incorporated the company’s sales training into the meetings. The training is similar to TM training; yet the trainers are much tougher than TM. The club has also provided a good channel for people to consider job change application, and transfer between departments in Fedex.
